Another famous work by Mahler is Das Lied von der Erde, which would have been his ninth symphony, but Mahler�s fear of death prevented him from calling it his ninth. He gave the first American performance of the Sixth Symphony as late as 1947, shared the centenary cycle in New York with Bernstein and Walter, and left a string of radio archive recordings across the world that are only now receiving official release. Instead, Mahler continued going away in the summers for compositional retreats, building a lakeside retreat near the Wörthersee in Carinthia.
